Founder, Learnergy

BY MITCHELLE CHIBUNDU

I'm the founder of Learnergy, a community of lifelong learners thriving across creative industries. I’m also the co-founder at Paypas. The most rewarding part of my work is my impact on people. As a highly passionate individual who values community as much as creativity, the thought of the influence my creations can have on the world motivates me to strive for excellence constantly.

Tell us about your current role and the most rewarding part of your work

I was previously a Product Designer at Quidax —a global cryptocurrency exchange company on a mission to make sending money as easy as sending an SMS.

What did you do before what you stated above?

As an undergraduate Accounting student, I was always curious about prospects in my field, which led me to research a lot. I discovered that the companies I looked forward to working with increasingly emphasised tech-savvy talents.  This realisation inspired me to take matters into my own hands and learn about operating systems, front-end web development and design.

I deliberately embraced these new skills, knowing they would give me a competitive edge and align with my strengths and interests. I have fully dedicated myself to this path, knowing it holds great promise for my future.

What inspired you to pursue a career in design?

MyLifeMap is a simple template by Learnergy to help you outline your life's purpose and goals to achieve clarity and direction. I first built it last year, but it launched in 2023 after multiple iterations.

What is something you designed, built or contributed to that you’re utmostly proud of?

I love connecting with people, trying new experiences, creating fun fashion or lifestyle content, having intriguing conversations, and going on a living spree. I love life unapologetically!

How do you enjoy spending your time when you’re not working?

This is a very lovely and exceptional question. My journey in the tech industry has instilled in me a strong sense of purpose to give back and assist others. Living in a country like Nigeria, which presents its unique challenges, has made me aware of the power of technology. As a result, my passion is to connect others with opportunities that can similarly change their lives. Last year, we led a five-month product design fellowship at Learnergy, where we trained 25 students and leveraged our connections within the industry to bring in experienced designers to provide additional guidance. I am excited about what we will do in the next cohort.

How has your work impacted the larger community or ecosystem?

I am convinced that storytelling and providing a platform for women to share their journeys and engage with the broader ecosystem is crucial in advancing gender equality in the industry.
— Paula-Mary Onikepo Williams

Firstly, Coloured Layers is such an amazing initiative, big thumbs up to the team for this initiative. I am convinced that storytelling and providing a platform for women to share their journeys and engage with the broader ecosystem is crucial in advancing gender equality in the industry.

Additionally, I believe that human capital development is equally important. Investing in the training and development of women to equip them with the necessary skills to succeed on a global scale is a key aspect of this effort.

What, in your opinion, should be done to make more women in design visible?

How do you continue to develop your skills and stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in design and technology?

One major way I keep track of my growth and learnings is Interaction Design Foundation (IDF) which I have used for years. I am an avid reader, so designing books has continued to help me grow in my career. Active community engagement, attending conferences and participating in meaningful conversations have proven to be powerful avenues for fostering connections with the broader tech industry.

I know there are a lot of resources out there, but these have helped me:

Change by Design (Exceptional book, quite long but worth it)

User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design Are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play, Design Daily Report, Smashing magazine

Is there something you know now, that you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?

The journey is longggg! The path to success in tech is a marathon, not a sprint. Despite the common perception that tech has a low barrier to entry, it is essential to understand that this field requires patience and perseverance. I have learned this through my own experiences, including a layoff from my previous job and the realisation that personal development is critical. This perspective shift has helped me focus on the long-term game and continuously strive towards professional growth.

What is an interesting and possibly unexpected fact about you?

I cry a lot. LOOOOL! Honestly, it helps me feel better.

What would you wear to a meeting that could potentially change your life?

Definitely a Pink, well-suited 3-Piece. Emphasis on "Pink", lol

What advice would you give to other women pursuing a design career who feel stuck in the journey?

My friend, it is understandable to feel exhausted sometimes, and the temptation to give up may arise. It is important to remember that this is only the beginning of your journey. There is still so much to achieve, and it can be disheartening. But keep your chin up, stay focused on doing your work, and never hesitate to advocate for yourself. I am in your corner, always supporting you and cheering you on. Sending you love and positivity as you continue on your fantastic journey. *chef kiss*
